Rubber Neti Kriya Benefits and Precautions

Rubber Neti Kriya, or Sutra Neti, is a yogic nasal cleansing technique that passes a thin rubber tube (or a cotton thread) through the nostrils and out of the mouth. It is part of the Shatkarma practices in Hatha Yoga, designed to cleanse and purify the body. Rubber Neti is particularly effective for clearing nasal passages and maintaining overall respiratory health.

How to Perform Rubber Neti Kriya

1. Materials Needed

  • Rubber tube or Sutra: A soft, flexible rubber catheter or a specially prepared cotton thread (approximately 12 to 18 inches long).

  • Make sure the rubber tube is sterilized and safe for use.

2. Step-by-Step Procedure

  • Preparation

    • Sit or stand in a comfortable position.

    • Ensure the rubber tube is clean and lubricated with a little water or saline solution to make the insertion process smoother.

  • Inserting the Rubber Tube

    • Gently insert one end of the rubber tube into one nostril.

    • Slowly and gently push the tube through the nasal passage until it reaches the back of your throat.

    • Keep your mouth slightly open to breathe.

  • Pulling the Tube

    • Once the tube reaches the throat, use two fingers to gently pull it out through your mouth.

    • Now, the tube will be passing from your nostril to your mouth.

  • Gentle Cleansing:

    • Slowly and carefully move the tube back and forth to clean the nasal passages.

    • After a few gentle passes, remove the tube completely.

  • Repeat on the Other Side:

    • Repeat the same process with the other nostril.

3. Post-Cleansing

  • After completing the kriya, clean the tube thoroughly with warm water and ensure it is disinfected before the next use.

  • Gently blow your nose to remove any remaining mucus or impurities.

  • Practice deep breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) to further clear the nasal passages.

Precautions

  • Begin slowly: If you're new to this practice, start with the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.

  • Do not force: Be gentle while inserting and pulling the tube. If you feel discomfort or pain, stop immediately.

  • Ensure hygiene: Always sterilize the rubber tube before and after each use to avoid infections.

  • Avoid if ill: Do not practice Rubber Neti if you have a severe cold, nasal polyps, or an infection in the nasal passage.

  • Ear or throat problems: People with ear infections or throat issues should consult a doctor before attempting this kriya.

Frequency

  • Rubber Neti can be practiced two to three times a week, depending on individual needs.

  • Daily practice is not necessary unless recommended for specific therapeutic purposes.

Rubber Neti Kriya is an advanced practice that offers deep cleansing of the nasal and respiratory systems, helping to maintain optimal health. It is highly effective but should be approached with care, especially for beginners.
