Moola Bandha (Root Lock) is a foundational yogic practice that activates and regulates energy at the root centre, known as the Mooladhara Chakra. Derived from Sanskrit, "Moola" means "root" and "Bandha" means "lock" or "seal." This practice helps channel energy upward from the root, promoting stability, balance, and mental calm. Moola Bandha is essential for deepening pranayama, meditation, and other yogic practices by energizing and harmonizing the body’s subtle energies.
How to Perform Moola Bandha
Starting Position
Sit comfortably in a meditative posture like Sukhasana (Easy Pose) or Padmasana (Lotus Pose).
Keep your spine straight and body relaxed.
Breath Control
Take a deep breath in and exhale completely. After exhaling fully, hold the breath out (this is called Bahya Kumbhaka—retaining the breath after exhalation).
Engage the Root Lock
Gently contract the muscles of the pelvic floor (the area between the anus and genitals), pulling them upward and inward, as though stopping the flow of urine or contracting the perineum.
Hold this contraction as long as you can comfortably, then gently release and breathe normally.
Release:
Gradually relax the pelvic muscles and take a few natural breaths.
Repeat this process for 3-5 rounds, resting between each round.

Precautions
Begin Gradually: Start gently with Moola Bandha, gradually increasing the hold duration as you practice.
Health Conditions: Avoid or consult an expert if you have conditions like pregnancy, abdominal issues, or recent surgery.
Listen to Your Body: If you feel discomfort or tension, release the lock immediately and relax.
Moola Bandha is a powerful practice that stabilizes and balances the body’s energies, supporting both physical and mental well-being. With regular practice, it brings a sense of grounding and focus that enhances your overall yoga experience.
